Hey everyone, long post but I really need some guidance.
I just got back from a 3 month work trip and the person I trusted to look after my tank clearly wasn’t doing their job. Nearly all my fish are dead. The only survivors are my Bristlenose pleco and my shrimp, which honestly says a lot about how bad it got.
The water looks rough and I’m pretty sure there’s a parasite situation going on. On top of that I noticed these white fuzzy ball like things in the tank. Not sure if that’s fungus, columnaris, or something else entirely.
My questions:
1. Do I treat the tank as is, or do I do a big water change and partial reset first before treating? I’m worried that treating dirty water won’t be as effective, but I also don’t want to stress the pleco and shrimp more than they already are.
2. What are those white fuzz balls? Fungus? A bacterial bloom? Something growing on decaying waste or debris?
3. Do I keep the plants? I have live plants in there and I don’t know if they’d survive a treatment or if they’re harboring whatever killed my fish.
The pleco and shrimp surviving makes me think whatever this is might be fish specific, but I don’t want to assume. Any help from people who’ve dealt with a neglected tank crash would be massively appreciated. I’m heartbroken about losing my fish and just want to do right by the survivors.

1.Why are you assuming there are parasites? Especially if the tank is already gross water changes are never gonna hurt.
2. White fuzz is something decomposing. Could be fish, could be extra food. Take it out.
3. Unless you want to completely start over leave the plants they’ll survive most of the treatments
