I’m looking at ordering this tomorrow or Tuesday since the sale at Petco is until 12/2 and was wondering if cube tanks are bad for betta fish. I have a betta fish currently in a 5.5 gallon aqueon rimmed tank that’s not a cube. Never had a cube tank before. Thanks all!

Any shape tank is good, imo more to do with how you scape the interior give em stuff to keep them happy.

  2. Bad? No, as long as it has plenty of places to hide and lounge. but a wider+shallower tank would be a little more preferable, at least so the fish can get to the surface easier. Really not that big a difference either way.

they appreciate swimming space more than height, but isnt explicitly “bad” for them

I don’t see why it would be. I’ve had problems with certain brands of tanks having very reflective glass so I have to turn the tank lights way down because my room is so dimly lit, but I have a imagitarium tank with ricefish and have noted that it does not have this issue. Bettas will pretty much be happy in whatever you put them in as long as it’s not a vase 😉

  5. They’re not bad, but they’re not ideal. Especially if they have long fins, bettas appreciate a tank that is wider than it is long so they can access the surface more easily.

  6. I had a 7.5 gallon cube for a betta. I scaped it with lots of plants, and hangouts close to the surface and it worked great. It was like a little jungle, so lots of exploring going on.

I would say it’s fine as long as you maximize the enrichment.

  7. I have this exact tank and my betta is thriving! And its just a really great looking tank

Edit: ok not the exact tank, mine is 14 gal and it is the perfect size

  8. Some of my oldest bettas lived in heavily planted 6g cubes. They had a filter and heater. I wish I had those tanks still!

I’ve kept bettas in these, and they’re great for viewing, but if you use the included cover make sure you keep a close eye on temperature. A glass box can overheat very quickly. I’d strongly recommend either getting a different, porous cover or only partially filling the cube (4” down from the top) and leaving the top open.

Nope. I have a couple (6) aquatop ventis specifically for a few of mine. They’re pretty decent for bettas, built in sponge filters for gentle flow and a decent little light.

Someone always bitches when I post pictures of them that they’re too small, they’re 5 gallons but I know the more popular idea these days is minimum 10 gallons. Sorry yall, I have over 25 bettas that’s not happening lol

  11. I have the 14gal version. There were a lot of reviews about the seals failing, so I did apply silicone to all of the seals before using to be safe. I’ve been using it for 5yrs without issue.

  12. Context:

Are they as GOOD as a shallow wide opening tank which emulates a rice paddy? No.

Are they better than the cups at pet stores? Incomparably superior.

Are they as good as your usual 5 or 10 gallon tanks? The basic rectangle? Yup.

Don’t worry about. Provided it’s big enough, properly cycled (with a lid), and given plenty of hiding places? Enjoy.
