i occasionally let luna have a visit with the males for 5 ish minutes since i heard flaring was good for their fins but my dudes are super smart so flare sticks, mirrors, etc don’t work which is why i let luna visit. is this stressful for them? she never seems stressed or angry after but i just would like a second opinion. i NEVER take her out of the cup, and i NEVER leave her in longer then 20 minutes, usually its always 5-10 minutes. i see she also brightens up after this as well not just the dudes, but if it’s like a placebo effect or something i’d like to know.

  1. Bettas don’t actually need to flare for their fin or gill health.
Flaring is just a natural behavior they use to communicate—like showing off, defending territory, or reacting to something they see (like another fish or their reflection). It’s not something they have to do to keep their gills or fins “working properly”—their normal movement and daily activity already handle that.

That said, occasional flaring (like a few minutes here and there) isn’t harmful—it’s basically just a bit of stimulation. The main thing is not to overdo it, since frequent or prolonged flaring can stress them out over time and potentially lead to health issues.

The “brightening up” you’re seeing afterward is most likely just a temporary adrenaline/alert response rather than a health benefit. Bettas are solitary fish, and even short interactions can be stressful—especially since they can still detect each other through pheromones even after being separated.

So overall, what you’re doing in short, infrequent sessions isn’t dangerous—but it’s also not something they need at all, and it’s generally better not to intentionally trigger flaring on a regular basis.

  2. You dont. These are captive bred bettas. By “flaring them” you’re teaching them to be aggressive.
