Hey yall, trying to teach myself to freshwater fish. This is just a hook with a nightcrawler, a few split weights, and a clip on bobber. Just trying to catch anything in my apartment complex’s pond that’ll bite.
I’m used to pier fishing where my line never had any slack on it so I’m just trying to figure out if this is normal. This is just a $50 ugly stik rod and reel combo from walmart, reel came with line already on it ready to go

No it should not
It happens when bobber fishing in still water. Just remember to try and reel in any remaining slack before trying to set the hook or anything
Edit: should also mention that rod/reels with line preloaded usually have some pretty garbage line on them. Most people recommend replacing it with at least fresh if not higher quality line as best practice

With a bobber you want some slack, not too much that you cant get the line tight as the bobber goes under. React fast, once the bobber goes down you want to instantly put tension on the line, or if going for bigger fish, set the hook. With bluegill I just pull a bit while reeling to feel tension when the bobber goes down or you can rip it right out their mouth if too agressive.
No, as other have said this is likely due to bobber fishing and your pre loaded line. Even some nice lines can have this issue when first spooling and the going out to use. I had this happen once after buying a nice rod and reel and the shop tossed ok line on for free, easy fix was warm water. Took the reel spool off and soaked it in warm water for a lil type bit and never had an issues with it after that
