Horrible. I told the lady the entire shelf is dead and she just looks at me and shrugs. There’s about like 3 alive fish that are moving and 2 that can barely move.. then like 6 actual dead ones not breathing at all.

If I could I’d just fucking steal all of these damn fish. Something needs to be done about this

Petco and petsmart needs to no longer get betta fish shipments, there needs to be a law or something
I feel so awful leaving without all these fish 💔

Gosh that sucks. I would like to point out this is location specific though.

My local ones have always been decent about doing water changes in their cups and removing any dead or severely ill off the shelf. The worst I’ve seen the last few times I went was moderate fin rot, which while not good is far from as bad as this.

I still think they shouldn’t be in cups but in some places the employees do care

There’s really no reason to sell Bettas at their stores. There are plenty of retailers that sell Bettas and local fish stores are ideally where people should go anyway. We all know they’re a chain so they’re not great for any animal but at least other animals have enclosures instead of cups(and in my area the employees genuinely care and do EVERYTHING they can to avoid bad things happening and also do not agree with keeping Bettas in their store. Imagine if we just kept lizards in cups with a heat lamp, quite a few people would be horrified “it can barely turn around in there 😨” yeah it’s the same for these poor fish. Maybe they won’t die as fast as a lizard would in poor conditions but it’s basically the same. They both need the care that they need and a properly sized enclosure is number #1.

  3. Might wanna send this to corporate. I am sure they’d be concerned about the bad image, if nothing else.

  4. contact corporate. this is absolutely unacceptable from any standpoint and even though big chain pet stores tend to be heartless, i can tell you from experience that higher ups are not going to be happy about that.

Really, really sad. The betta fish at Petco or Petsmart really depends on the store manager. My local Petco’s GM is a fish expert (in both freshwater and saltwater) who can always be found working in the fish section. The quality of fish at this particular petco is better than my LFS. When I bought a betta at our Petco, the GM told me that he feels bad for the bettas, so he tries to make their lives less miserable by doing daily water changes for those little cups. Obviously, the GM at this Petco or Petsmart is clearly not a fish person..
